Roy Orbison The Ultimate Collection

September 15, 2016- New York, NY- Roy’s Boys LLC, the Nashville-based company founded by the sons of Roy Orbison to administer their late father’s catalog and safeguard his legacy, has teamed up with Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, to release Roy Orbison – The Ultimate Collection. The 26-track anthology, out October 28, will be available as a single CD and as a double vinyl LP set, spans four decades, from his start at Sun Records in the mid-1950s, all the way through his massive comeback in the late ‘80s. The collection chronicles Orbison’s work both as a solo artist and with supergroup Traveling Wilburys until his tragic death at the age of 52. The Ultimate Collection marks the first time ever that any Roy Orbison compilation album has incorporated tracks from all of the aforementioned sources.

Roy’s son, Alex Orbison, painstakingly selected songs that were most representational of his father’s vast catalog, which totals 27 studio albums, four live albums, and over 60 singles, 22 of which placed in the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart. Narrowing it down was no easy task. “It is a great honor for me and my brothers, Wesley and Roy Jr., to finally and definitively distill our father’s entire career onto a single disc as best one can possibly do and, certainly, as never done before,” said Alex. “It is the result of years of research, archiving and listening, and it is with supreme and heartfelt pleasure that we will be able to share it with the world.”

Born in north Texas and raised in the western part of the state, Roy Orbison first made his mark on the national music scene when he recorded for Sam Phillips’ fabled Sun Records in 1956. It was during this era that the label was the launching pad for the careers of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis. Orbison connected with the rockabilly flavored “Ooby Dooby” for Sun, but his truly significant commercial breakthrough came with his string of hits on the Monument label, starting in the early ‘60s.

Around this time Roy adopted his trademark sunglasses and performed ballads and rockers with equal aplomb. He toured constantly both in the US and abroad, including a UK tour on which he headlined over the Beatles. Top 10 hits of the era included “Crying,” “Only The Lonely,” “In Dreams,” “Dream Baby,” the number one U.S. single “Running Scared” and the massive international chart topper, “Oh, Pretty Woman,” all of which are represented on The Ultimate Collection. The set also includes “Love Hurts,” “Blue Bayou,” “Falling,” “Leah,” “Mean Woman Blues,” “Blue Angel” and “It’s Over,” all from the Monument era.

Starting in 1965, Roy Orbison’s eight-year stint with MGM Records continued to yield hits, particularly overseas. Among these present on The Ultimate Collection are “Walk On,” “Crawling Back,” “Ride Away” and “Too Soon To Know.” These came out at the most emotionally turbulent time in Roy’s life, when his wife Claudette died in a motorcycle accident and his sons Roy DeWayne Orbison and Anthony King Orbison perished in a house fire. Towards the latter part of this period he met and married the German-born Barbara Anne Marie Wellhöner Jakobs, who is the mother of Roy Jr. and Alex.

After Roy’s career went through a fallow spell, David Lynch’s showcasing of his music in the surreal 1986 film Blue Velvet sparked new interest in the icon. By the following year, Roy’s career was in the midst of a renaissance, which led to his celebrity-studded live television concert special A Black & White Night. Taken from that performance is “Claudette,” a song written by Roy about his first wife, that had been a huge hit for the Everly Brothers.

Soon after, a supergroup was formed consisting of Roy and his friends Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison with whom he had first bonded back when he toured with the Beatles. In 1988, the Traveling Wilburys released their debut album that went triple platinum in the U.S. “Not Alone Anymore” and “Handle with Care” from Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 are featured on The Ultimate Collection, the first time any of the group’s songs have appeared on a Roy Orbison release. “It was my favorite thing I ever did,” said Jeff Lynne, referring to “Handle with Care,” who co-produced the album with George Harrison. “I put in all these nice, Roy Orbison-type chords, to make his voice shine even more. I played it to the rest of the group, and they just went, ‘Wow, that’s fantastic.'”

Roy spent much of 1988 recording his solo comeback studio album Mystery Girl, produced by Lynne. In December of that year, he died unexpectedly from a heart attack, ergo the album’s early 1989 release was posthumous. It proved to be a huge commercial success, due in part to the tremendous single “You Got It,” later covered by Bonnie Raitt, as well as “California Blue” and “She’s A Mystery to Me” (written by Bono and the Edge of U2). These tracks are included in The Ultimate Collection, in addition to the later “Heartbreak Radio” (from 1992’s King of Hearts album) and “I Drove All Night,” a song written for Roy by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, but made famous by Cyndi Lauper. Her version was recorded after, but released before, the Orbison original.

“He came from nothing, but he had these amazing gifts and this amazing drive and, of course, that voice,” said Alex Orbison to journalist Jeff Slate, who wrote liner notes for The Ultimate Collection and is also co-author of the forthcoming authorized Roy Orbison biography. Alex also said of his father, “I think it would be hard to imagine the story if you tried to write it.”

The Ultimate Collection was produced by Alex Orbison, Chuck Fleckenstein and John Jackson, and mastered by Vic Anesini at Battery Studios in New York.

[New York, NY – September 14, 2016] Nashville-based indie pop/rock band Colony House announces today that their second studio album ONLY THE LONELY will be released on January 13th on Descendant/RCA Records. Producer Peter Katis known for his work with Interpol, The National, Frightened Rabbit, and more worked with the band on many of the album tracks, as well as notable mixer Vance Powell (Jack White, Elle King, Beck).

Colony House’s single “You & I” is currently in rotation on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation and the video for “You & I” is airing on Fuse, MTV U, and MTV Live. Colony House premiered their outrageously smart and funny video for “You & I” on NOISEY.COM who wrote: “The video for ‘You & I’…descends into chaos, instant replay smacks, freeze frame moments, egos colliding, slapstick horseplay…musically the Tennessee boys work a bright brand of indie-pop that’s entirely at odds with the physical angst manifested in this video. But it’s this very juxtaposition that makes this video so amusing to watch.”

Talking about inspiration for the video, lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Caleb Chapman who co-directed the video with Ry Cox said, “One of the most popular questions me and Will get in interviews these days is, ‘What’s it like being in a band with your brother? The short answer we typically give is something like, ‘It’s great! There always seems to be disappointment in the eyes of the person asking the question. Perhaps they were expecting some war story on how the band teeters on the edge of extinction because of two brothers’ hostile relationship.” CLICK HERE to watch “You & I.”

Colony House will be kicking off their 18 city tour with alternative rock band The Mowgli’s on September 20th at Bluebird Theater in Denver, wrapping on October 18th at Club Congress in Tucson with stops in New York, Chicago, Washington DC, and more. Colony House makes a stop in Toronto at The Velvet Underground on October 2nd. To purchase tickets, click here.  See below for full list of dates and venues.

Colony House premiered “You & I” on,  and  prior to it, announced their forthcoming album earlier this summer with the release of album track/ video for “You Know It” which premiered on Consequence of Sound.  The video for “You Know It” was also co-directed by the band’s lead singer and songwriter Caleb Chapman.

ONLY THE LONELY is the follow up to Colony House’s debut album When I Was Younger which featured their single “Silhouettes,” which has enjoyed over 8 million streams on Spotify and was the #1 most played track on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation for four months straight.  The band has previously performed on CONAN, Late Night with Seth Meyers and VH1 “Big Morning Buzz,”  and has been featured by  NPR MusicWall Street Journal, People Magazineand  Noisey, among many others.

Colony House is brothers Caleb Chapman and Will Chapman, Scott Mills, and Parke Avery.

“Listen Without Prejudice 25” the reissue of George Michaels iconic album

Sony Music is proud to announce Listen Without Prejudice 25,

the reissue of George Michael’s iconic album,

Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1, coming soon.

In celebration of the album’s reissue, Channel 4, BBC Worldwide and Sony Music have commissioned Freedom: George Michael (w/t), a stunning new film, narrated by George. It co-stars Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Mark Ronson, Mary J Blige, Tony Bennett, Liam Gallagher, James Corden, Ricky Gervais, the Freedom! ’90 video supermodels (Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Tatjana Patitz and Linda Evangelista) and more.

International distributor BBC Worldwide will also be making the film available to clients and broadcasters around the world. The US premiere will air on Showtime, broadcast date tbc.

A remastered version of George’s stunning 1996 MTV Unplugged performance will also be available as an album for the very first time as part of the Deluxe box set and 2CD Edition. The concert took place at the Three Mills Island Studios in East London on Friday October 11, 1996 and featured George playing ten of his finest songs from the Wham!, Faith, Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1 (Freedom ’90) and Older eras in an intimate setting. Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 will also be reissued on vinyl and digital.

Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 was George’s second solo album. Arranged, produced and almost completely written by George himself, it eloquently confirmed him as a pioneering, agenda-setting artist.

The staggering success of George’s first solo album Faith resulted in him becoming one of the few artists who could shift millions of albums worldwide. This, of course, was a dream scenario for the label but George had different plans. Unable and unwilling to be a 24-hour pop star, constantly in the media spotlight, George felt he needed to follow his artistic instincts regarding how his work should be presented. He decided he would not appear on Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1’s album cover or be available to physically promote the album beyond select interviews, but instead gave the label the David Fincher-directed Freedom! ‘90, which featured five of the most recognizable beauties on the planet, lip-syncing in place of George. This resulted in a difference in opinion between George and the label over how the album was promoted.

A multi-platinum-selling worldwide chart-topper which reached Number 1 in the UK (where it outsold Faith and went 4X platinum), Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 was the sound of a precedent-setting, boundary-pushing global superstar going his own way.

Shortly after the album’s release, George met his great love Anselmo Feleppo. His anger at Anselmo’s tragic early death, together with his frustration over how the US label had marketed his album contributed to his decision to embark on the traumatic court case with Sony. This left him blocked creatively for almost two years, during which time he made a conscious decision to channel all his energy into challenging the standard recording contract and fighting a corner for all artists. George lost the case but gained the personal and artistic freedom he craved.

Twenty-six years on, George and Sony are long reconciled. Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 remains a remarkable, timeless work, from the beautifully judged protest songs Praying For Time and Mother’s Pride, to the intimate Cowboys & Angels, via the autobiographical Freedom! ‘90. This was music George Michael felt truly committed to.

Directed by BAFTA nominee Phillip Smith, Freedom: George Michael (w/t), tells the gripping, dramatic story of the making of Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, the court case which followed and George’s personal struggle and pain as he loses Anselmo. Many have tried and failed, but George succeeded in reuniting the Freedom! ’90 video’s five supermodels. Other contributors include world famous artists such as Stevie Wonder whose “They Won’t Go When I Go” was Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1’s only cover; Elton John who describes the album as George’s “masterpiece”; Liam Gallagher who says George has “Lennon in him”; Mary J Blige who reminds us that George “broke all the rules for everybody”; Tony Bennett, Mark Ronson, Tracey Emin, Jean Paul Gaultier, Ricky Gervais, French Vogue editor Emmanuelle Alt and James Corden. There are contributions from some of the record company executives who were so uncomfortable facing one of their major artists in court and from the case lawyers.

And today George still continues to touch people with his words and music. This year alone has seen an unprecedented amount of film, TV, and game sync licenses using his music.

13 SEPTEMBER 2016 (Toronto, ON) – Norah Jones has released “Flipside,” a kinetic new single from her stunning sixth solo album Day Breaks, which arrives October 7 on Blue Note Records via Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. The album is a kindred spirit to the singer’s breakout debut Come Away With Me and finds the nine-time GRAMMY-winner returning to the piano (and her roots) on a 12-song set featuring jazz luminaries including her Blue Note label mates saxophonist Wayne Shorter, organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, and drummer Brian Blade.

The most rhythmically charged song on the album, “Flipside” also carries a powerful socio-political charge. Norah sets a driving bass line with her left hand before Blade’s drums and Chris Thomas’ bass kick in. Smith’s organ swirls overhead while Norah’s vocal builds to a shout at the chorus. “I was really affected by the news and everything that’s been going on in the world and in this country over the last couple years. It’s been really volatile and crazy,” Norah says. “I was listening to the Les McCann song ‘Compared to What’ a lot and was very much influenced by how grooving and amazing it is but also how it’s very political and it’s just from the gut.”

Fans who pre-order the download of Day Breaks on the Norah Jones Store, or iTunes will receive the singles “Flipside” and “Carry On” instantly. Day Breaks is available for pre-order in all formats at the Norah Jones Store and a special 180-gram orange vinyl version of the album will also be available, as well as a deluxe CD version featuring 4 live bonus tracks.

“Norah Jones has a way of being there when you need her… a warm, honeyed voice, right up against your ear, AutoTune-free and honest,” wrote the Boston Globe in a rave review of Norah’s first-ever Newport Jazz Festival performance this summer. Norah will also play her first-ever return performance in her college town on September 23 when she headlines the Oaktopia festival in Denton, Texas, home to the prestigious University of North Texas College of Music where Norah was a jazz piano major before moving to NYC. She has a Canadian date in Vancouver, playing The Queen Elizabeth Theatre on October 18.

Ash & Ice Out Now on Domino

The Kills (Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart) released their fifth full-length album Ash & Ice earlier this summer. Today, the band shares their video for ‘Impossible Tracks,’ which was directed by Ellis Bahl.

Alison on the video:
“Introducing our new video for Impossible Tracks! Shot by director Ellis Bahl, at Luna Park – the old, weird, and wonderful amusement park of dreams and nightmares so iconic to Melbourne, Australia. We’d always wanted to shoot there, so on our last tour down under, we took this fine opportunity.

Welcome to off season…winter time, blistering bitter cold, the park to ourselves all day and night. The lights buzzing, the gears cranking, a hallucinatory stream of whiplash and spin. We shot between bursts of monsoon weather and crooked wind, we rode the rides, played the games, and lost ourselves in the mirror house. Enter in, the guts of the park, through the mouth of lights, Luna’s pearly teeth, past the big bad gaze of those glowing blue eyes…Buckle your belts and take the ride on ‘Impossible Tracks.'”

2CD / 3LP To Be Released October 21 On ISO / Columbia Records

As the November 8 UK opening of Lazarus at London’s King Cross Theatre approaches, the cast and band of the original New York production will release their versions of the David Bowie songs from the show as the Lazarus Cast Album October 21 on ISO / Columbia Records. The album will be available for pre-order September 16 with all orders receiving instant downloads of the cast versions of “Life On Mars?” (sung by Sophia Anne Caruso) and the title track (sung by Michael C. Hall).

Standing alongside the cast’s interpretations of classics from his canon are the three final David Bowie studio recordings. Co-produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti and recorded with Donny McCaslin and his quartet, the same band that played on Bowie’s ★ album, these last three songs — “No Plan,” “Killing A Little Time,” “When I Met You”— bring completely new dimensions to their cast counterparts. The original ★ version of “Lazarus” is also included on the cast album.

The ★ album has been shortlisted for the 2016 Mercury Prize and as part of the awards ceremony on September 15 Michael C. Hall will be performing the song “Lazarus” with Henry Hey and the Lazarus house band. The show will be broadcast live from the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith on BBC 4 and BBC Radio 6 Music.

The Lazarus cast album was produced by the show’s musical director Henry Hey, who had previously worked with Bowie on “The Next Day” and features vocals from Hall, Caruso, Cristin Miloti, Michael Esper and other cast members backed by the seven-piece house band Hey assembled for the New York run. The album was recorded January 11, 2016. Upon arriving at the studio, the musicians and cast were shocked and saddened to learn that Bowie had passed away the evening before. Their emotional performances that day are captured on this recording.

The distinctive artwork for the Lazarus cast recording has been designed by Jonathan Barnbrook who also worked with Bowie on the ★, The Next Day, Heathen and Nothing Has Changed albums.

Written by Bowie and Enda Walsh, directed by Ivo Van Hove and produced by Robert Fox, Lazarus opened December 7, 2015 at the New York Theatre Workshop to great critical acclaim. The New York Times raved “Ice-cold bolts of ecstasy shoot like novas through the glamorous muddle and murk of Lazarus, the great-sounding, great-looking and mind-numbing new musical built around songs by David Bowie,” while Rolling Stone hailed it as a “Surrealistic Tour de Force… milk-swimming, lingerie-sniffing, gin-chugging theater at its finest.”

Currently On Tour With Explosions In The Sky
Baltimore-based Lower Dens return after 2015’s Escape from Evil, with brand new single ‘Real Thing‘. The song, written by Lower Dens’ Jana Hunter and fellow musicians Arthur Bates and Ariel Rechtshaid, was produced by Jana Hunter and mixed by Henrik Iivari with additional production from Rechtshaid.
The accompanying music video, which finds Hunter alone in the spotlight, is directed by SSION‘s Cody Critcheloe, who previously collaborated on Escape from Evil’s ‘To Die in L.A.’ music video.
Watch the SSION-directed ‘Real Thing’ music video HERE.
Says Hunter on the track and video:
“Initially, I wrote ‘Real Thing’ with my friend, musician Arthur Bates. Arthur and I have had a very long, intense, chaotic and very close friendship. He’s also been a major influence on me personally and artistically. I love him. When we’re together, the air is full of intense melancholy, reckless abandon, and a very goofy kind of dark humor. Somehow in our years of knowing each other we’d never written a real song together. We got together specifically for that purpose, in Houston, the town where we met, and wrote this song in about an hour. The lyrics were inspired by an advice column in an old copy of Oui magazine I found in Arthur’s apartment. The woman writing in to the column seemed genuinely torn between her love for her husband and her desire to fuck around. I find that kind of selfishness entirely relatable, the kind of thing all of us know about ourselves and find nearly impossible to admit. Those kinds of simultaneously internal and yet universal struggles bring me to tears. What if we could all acknowledge just those kinds of flaws, accept them, resolve not to judge each other? I mean, who wants this misery? This alienation? The greed that follows generations of repression? The jealously, oppression and injustice that come next? No. Hell no. If that’s reality, I don’t care to be a part of it. Or at least that’s how I let myself feel from time to time, until I realize I love people and I’m part of the community of humankind and if things are gonna be better for anybody it’s on me to do my part. Might seem like a lot but, for me, it’s all in this song.
Last, I wanna acknowledge Ariel, Caleb and Henrik who contributed writing and engineering. They all added so much and I’m very grateful. And of course, to Arthur as well, I owe so much. Thank you, my friend.
The visuals are 100% Cody Critcheloe AKA SSION, whose vision I will always follow to its realization. I have immense respect for him.”
