As Childish Gambino once again sheds his skin, Awaken My Love! is a sonic evolution. It has been described as “R&B meets Pink Floyd,” by one journalist while others have cited an amalgam of rock, funk, and soul influences. It is a groundbreaking next step following the genre blending STN MTN / Kauai mixtape and the twice-Grammy nominated rap album, because the internet.
Breaking the mold and creating fully-formed, alternate worlds is a trademark of this creator, who presented Awaken My Love! first at his PHAROS festival in Joshua Tree, CA last September. To attend, fans utilized the scalper-proof PHAROS app which served as a “compass” that guided guests and communicated the ethos of both the event and the new music as “a gathering of the 5 intuitives of the human experience: tribe, ritual, experience abstraction, architecture, language.”
Reactions to Awaken, My Love! from PHAROS hinted to expect the unexpected.
“Gambino’s new music has a fusion of funk, soul, hip-hop and blues, among other genres, blended together to create a gumbo of audial goodness. It’s feel-good, going-down-memory-lane, being-in-your-feelings kind of music. It’s passionate, yet light and vibrant. It’s a must-listen so be on the lookout for when the material is released to the public.” – Billboard “If Because the Internet represented a vape-smoking, phone-obsessed, introspective, existentialist part of Gambino, (the new music) opens a window to another side of him: one that is earthier and more ritualistic.” – The Fader
“(The new music) cleverly fuses elements of funk, jazz, soul, blues, Hip Hop and pop in ways not heard since The Love Below. Gambino lets loose his inner George Clinton, James Brown and Andre 3000 fearlessly. For the nearly 70-minute span, the 12 featureless songs feel like transforming organisms that flow freely to the next.” – HipHopDx
“…somehow, Gambino stood out on that ledge like a hurricane, giving us Parliament Funkadelic on one song and Earth, Wind & Fire on another. The choir rollicked as fake lightning lit up the false sky. The guitars hummed. It was vision of the future of experiential music, featuring incredibly well-done music of black-art-past with a modern twist. A way lighted by Childish Gambino and Ludwig Goransson, specifically.” – Okayplayer
