Serena Ryder

Ryder to kick-off festival season headlining CBC Music Fest on May 27

13 April 2017 (TORONTO, ON) – Multi-award winning songstress, Serena Ryder will release of her new record, UTOPIA, on May 26 via Serenader Source/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. The lead single “Electric Love” hits radio waves today and you can view the flashy new video that premiered on The track will be available to download and stream tomorrow and fans can pre-order the album and limited edition bundles here.

“Electric Love is a song about feeling the magnetic energy between two people.” Serena describes, “It goes beyond race, religion and sexual identity. Whether you like it or not, the force is out of your control and it’s up to the individuals to decide if they should to act on it or not…but I would.”

For this new album, Ryder was inspired by the Cherokee parable of the Two Wolves. The story states we all have a fight inside us between good and evil, light and dark; the “two wolves.” Ryder found personal resonance in this duality and during the songwriting process explored both sides to create a balance, her UTOPIA.

“I found in a lot of the songs there was that dynamic when I looked back,” Ryder reflects. “So many people, when they put out a record, it’s all dark or it’s all light and happy. But on this record there’s a lot of juxtaposition of both those things – the light and the dark. I was wondering what if you married the two. “

Ryder’s genre-defying songwriting is showcased on UTOPIA. She has found the fine balance of blending her singer-songwriter sensibilities, her rock intuition while effortlessly lacing in the undeniable catchiness of what makes a song pop.

UTOPIA follows the critical and commercial hit, Harmony (double platinum certified). Harmonyproduced the unstoppable, triple-platinum single, “Stompa” and platinum, “What I wouldn’t Do” and garnered three Juno Awards plus a 2014 MuchMusic Video Award. Ryder was also awarded a 2014 Canadian Screen Award for Achievement in Music for her original song for “It’s No Mistake” from the movie The Right Kind of Wrong.

Serena Ryder and her band will perform at multiple festival dates this summer, including CBC Music Fest on May 27 in Toronto with a headlining tour to come this fall. For full list of tour dates, please visit

Declan McKenna

Declan McKenna releases his debut album ‘What Do You Think About The Car?’ on the 28th July 2017 through Columbia Records.

The record was recorded in London and LA alongside producer James Ford, except Listen To Your Friends, which was produced by Rostam Batmanglij, Paracetamol, produced by Neil Comber, and Brazil, produced by Max Marlow.

To coincide with the album’s announcement, Brazil, the track that kick-started Declan’s career at the age of fifteen, is announced as his new single and launches with a Taz Tron Delix directed video.

Watch the video to Brazil here:

British musician Declan McKenna is a pertinent example of why the future might not be quite so bleak after all. That isn’t specifically ‘our’ future per se, for that, sadly, remains under a heavy raincloud, but for a new generation light bulbs are switching on, emphatically. Green shoots, fresh interpretations, young minds that won’t/can’t sit back and suck it all up. These guys are apparently smarter than that. They’ve got notions of their own, questions to be answered, and maybe even some answers to questions. Answers. Imagine. No pressure.

Global politics and millennial futures aside for the moment, and eighteen-year-old Declan McKenna is becoming a comparatively wisened hand at this music industry game. A solitary track he posted to Bandcamp at the age of fifteen brought with it all the attention that the industry could at once foist. Legend has it that young Declan would finish school mid-afternoon in Hertfordshire, and schlep up to Liverpool Street on the train whilst still in his school uniform to meet with dozens of artist managers to determine who he could trust, and who could look beyond that track and gauge the bigger picture.  Whilst that circus was in play, he was selected by Michael Eavis to perform at Glastonbury Unsigned, (the acceptable face of Battle of the Bands, if you squint a bit), winning said battle by a landslide, and performing twice at the Glastonbury Festival that same Summer. Tick.

The song in question was called Brazil. It called out the heads of FIFA (topical of the time), and focused on the body’s innate corruption. That rolling stone continued to gather its moss, and if you search “Declan McKenna Brazil Sky News” on YouTube, you’ll find a bemused sixteen year old Declan discussing the song under the heat of Sky’s studio lights. He wears a big grin on his face for the most part. Not over-awed. He wrote a great song, and he’ll talk about it. Simple.

Inevitably a record deal soon arrived, and Declan started to piece together a live band (and what a band they’ve since become). He had a clutch of songs in various states of undress, one of which, Paracetamol, immediately stood out.  Alongside the colourful Casio squiggles and a melody-heavy chorus, was a story being told inspired by the tragic case of Leelah Alcorn, a transgender teenager in the US who committed suicide and posted her reasons for doing so on Tumblr. From the perspective of the media, Declan wrote Paracetamol to address the misunderstood reporting of transgender teens that regularly minimise the characters to their trauma alone. He explained it all in greater detail in a blog for The Guardian and the song’s eventual video provides a telling, crucial narrative to the song.

The introductory singles that followed kept true to Declan’s USP, each with their own socially aware story to tell. Bethlehem, for example, was written about religion being used to justify hate crime, and the instant, infectious Isombard focused on a US newsreader’s misinterpretation of the story he is trying to tell – as the propaganda rolls, said newsreader gets more and more confused by what he’s trying to say. It’s inspired by a poem by E. E Cummings, and is a fascinatingly complex narrative. Complex narratives are almost integral to what Declan does.

Watch Declan perform Isombard on Later with Jools Holland:

So, in a short period of time, Declan has become synonymous with wrapping his fizzing alt-pop songs in smart, engaged lyrical content. Crucially perhaps, none of the activist in Declan comes at the expense of his ear for a melody, and on the current single, The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home, we have the song that perfectly encapsulates who Declan is and what he’s trying to do. It’s an absolute corker.

The song was inspired by a series of events that occurred over the span of 2015, and was still a work-in-progress until the attack that took place in Paris on the 13th of November left him with a very real sense of fear and vulnerability he had yet to experience. Upon leaving Paris in the early hours of the morning, Declan realised that he had just experienced first-hand what he’d tried to express before in the song – the powerlessness of a young person in today’s world, experiencing the shock and the terror, and helplessly watching those in positions of power cause so much uncertainty for the future.

Kids… is Declan’s rally against the widespread assumption that the younger generation are self-obsessed and merely glued to their mobile phones. In reality, Declan argues, he and his friends are more politically engaged than ever, and care about things such as conflict, the economy, and climate change. The frustration that they were, until very recently, too young to vote on something that directly affects their futures. Despite those very real frustrations, The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home is a song that elicits a feeling of hope, and how ultimately the youth want to positively fight for change through both art and conversation.

Amen to that. To the future.

There will be stories behind each and every one of the tracks that make up ‘What Do You Think About The Car?’, but you’d need to ask him. Ultimately though, it’s a record of fantastic, smart tunes written by a young, inspiring and inspired musician.

07 April 2017 (Toronto, ON) – Less than a week after performing at the 2017 JUNO Awards, gold-selling alt-rockers Arkells release “Knocking At The Door”, an upbeat and empowering track written while on their most recent tour. The band teased the release of the brand new single earlier this week on their socials with visual teasers titled “Knocking,” “At,” “The” and finally “Door” late last night. “Knocking At The Door” is available digitally now and will be featured on a Deluxe Edition of the band’s most recent album, Morning Report. The Deluxe Edition of the album will be released later this spring via Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company.

“We kicked off this year with a tour across North America. The top of 2017 proved to be an inspiring time to travel the continent, and the experience of playing for different communities began to inform new musical ideas,” said frontman, Max Kerman. “Every night on stage, new melodies, words and arrangements began percolating throughout the band. When we came home we got right to work on this song. We didn’t want to wait around to release it. We wanted you to hear it now.”

Listen to “Knocking At The Door”.

With no shortage of new music for fans, Arkells released a “My Heart’s Always Yours” remix EP last month featuring remixes by alt-pop phenom Lights and indie darlings The Darcys. Also last month, Arkells and Québec musician Anik Jean released “Alive”, the first single taken from the BON COP, BAD COP 2 soundtrack, scheduled for release on April 28. Sung in both English and French, Anik Jean collaborated with Arkells frontman Max Kerman and drummer Tim Oxford for the song, as well as with Antoine Gratton for the orchestration direction.

Since the release of Morning Report, Arkells have spent much of the year touring, playing some of the biggest festivals in the U.S., including Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo; building their audience and solidifying their reputation as a passionate, high-energy, live-rock authority. In addition to performing at the 2017 JUNO Awards this past weekend, they were nominated for Group of The Year and Rock Album of The Year. This summer, Arkells are slated to play a host of marquee festivals including Coachella, Shaky Knees, Osheaga and Festival d’été de Québec, and they have a sold-out show with July Talk at Budweiser stage in Toronto on June 24.

05 APRIL 2017 (TORONTO, ON) – GRAMMY® Award-nominated multi-platinum, alternative pop maverick Halsey has returned with her brand new single “Now Or Never”. The video, which was shot in Mexico City and co-directed by Halsey and Sing J Lee [CHVRCHES, Muse, Years & Years], vividly comes to life as a gritty, cinematic reflection of the song. Watch it HERE.

The track is the first taste of her anxiously awaited second full-length album, hopeless fountain kingdom which Halsey executive produced alongside Benny Blanco, Greg Kurstin, Lido and Ricky Reed. Set for release on June 2, 2017 via Astralwerks/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company, the album is now available to preorder. Those who pre-order will receive an instant download of “Now Or Never”.

“The video for “Now Or Never” (my directorial debut!) is one part in the center of a long narrative that tells the story of two people in love despite the forces trying to keep them apart,” says Halsey. “On its own the song is about two impatient young lovers, but in the context of the hopeless fountain kingdom universe, the stakes are much higher for these two star-crossed lovers.”

Produced by Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat and Happy Perez, “Now Or Never” rattles with a soulful refrain over dystopic, shuddering synths. The vocals segue from a delicate croon into an R&B-style bridge, highlighting her impressive range. Listen to it HERE.

Halsey catapulted onto the scene in 2015, with her full-length Gold selling debut BADLANDS. She quickly followed her amazing debut success with sold-out arena tours and received a 2017 GRAMMY® nomination in the category of “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance” for “Closer,” her double-platinum megahit with The Chainsmokers. Prepare to leave BADLANDS. Welcome to hopeless fountain kingdom.

Lady Antebellum

30 March 2017 (TORONTO, ON) – With a new sense of history and possibilities, Lady Antebellum reveals the cover art and track listing behind their sixth studio album HEART BREAK, out June 9 via Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. Fans can now pre-order the ACM-nominated trio’s upcoming release at

Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott had a new mission — setting aside time to put themselves in new surroundings, and concentrate on writing and exploring musical endeavours with no distractions. They rented a house in Florida, living and working under the same roof, and when the creative process proved successful, the trio set up a second retreat in southern California.

“When we started working on this record, the goal was to give ourselves some space from the day to day,” said Scott. “Surrounding ourselves in a new environment with sunny beaches and warm weather really helped free our minds to focus solely on our art. We took some of our favorite writers and other writers we hadn’t worked with before to a new inspiring backdrop, where we were able to just write and soak up the journey. And it was on our first trip in Florida when we wrote ‘Heart Break’ that we felt it all click.”

Alongside producer busbee, their desire to shake things up was made evident by their current Top 20 single “You Look Good”, complete with a funky horn arrangement. Elsewhere, HEART BREAK ranges from the sweet melancholy of “Somebody Else’s Heart” to the dramatic, surging ballad “Hurt”, which is a powerful vehicle for Scott’s voice as she soars over a spare rhythm section and classic string arrangement. With the clever extended metaphor of its lyrics and percolating groove, “Army” has a feel that’s a throwback to ‘70s pop, while the bright, breezy lift-off of “Think About You,” with an R&B-style guitar bouncing off of a banjo lick, is entirely of the moment.

“Being together every day, living in a house together, that was the special ingredient this time,” continued Haywood, “And then in the studio, busbee added a whole new layer. He’s such an integral part of this new chapter for us.”

The trio had a hand in writing eleven songs on HEART BREAK, resulting in their most intimate and heartfelt work to date. As Lady A gears up to get back on the road, the group is excited to add this new range of sounds and colors into a set already packed with a familiar arsenal of hits.

“This record is really our story,” adds Kelley. “They have a universal feel to them, but there’s a lot of our personal stories here.”

  1. Heart Break (Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott, Jesse Frasure, Nicolle Galyon)
  1. You Look Good (busbee, Ryan Hurd, Hillary Lindsey)
  1. Somebody Else’s Heart  (Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott, busbee, Shane McAnally)

After taking time to pursue solo projects last year, Lady Antebellum’s “renewed energy” (People) follows more than 18 million units, nine Number One hits, ACM and CMA “Vocal Group of the Year” trophies three years in a row, and countless other honors including Billboard Music Awards, People’s Choice Awards and Teen Choice Awards.

Lady A will hit more than 65 shows in six countries including Toronto on June 27 at the Budweiser Stage, on their YOU LOOK GOOD WORLD TOUR presented by NABISCO, with special guests Kelsea Ballerini and Brett Young.

Bleacher’s Jack Antonoff says about the track, “‘Don’t Take The Money’ is a phrase I say in my head all the time. It has nothing to do with actual money. It means to follow the light. Don’t ignore a gut feeling. ‘Don’t take the money.’ I repeat it to myself when I’m trying to stay on track. Specifically in this song I’m writing about my relationship and the verse and chorus run quickly through the past and the fight leading to the euphoria of seeing the light with someone else.”

Additionally, Bleachers will be embarking on a North American headlining tour this spring.  The tour will be kicking off on Tuesday, April 25th in New York City and will be making stops in a number of cities including Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, and Detroit.  Tickets go on sale on Saturday, April 1st at 10am and can be purchased HERE.  See full list of tour dates below.
